Senior Safety at Home - Checklist


Stay safe at home while aging in place and prevent falls and hazards. This checklist can help you find and fix potential hazards in the home.


Checklist:

  1. Are there papers, shoes, books or other objects on the stairs? Keep stairs clear of all objects inside and outside.

  2. Are some steps broken or uneven? Fix loose or uneven steps.

  3. Is there a light switch at the top and bottom of the stairs?

  4. Is the carpet on the stairs loose or torn?

  5. Are handrails loose or broken?

  6. Do you have throw rugs on the floor?

  7. Do you have a clear path walking around furniture?

  8. Are there loose wires or cords on the floor?

  9. Is the light near your bed hard to reach?

  10. Is the path from your bed to bathroom dark? Use a nightlight.

  11. Is the tub or shower floor slippery?

  12. Do you need some help when you get in and out of the tub, shower and/or up from the toilet? Install grab bars.

  13. Keep kitchen utensils, foods, etc. on lower shelves.

  14. Some medicines can make you dizzy. Get up slowly after you sit or lie down.

  15. Stay safe and check for safety.
